How it works We group each council's term dates into six canonical holidays (October half-term, Christmas, February half-term, Easter, May half-term, summer). For each day, the heatmap shows what percentage of school areas with data for that holiday are off. A low number means a quieter week for travel, fuller availability, and (usually) cheaper prices.

Data notes Term dates are reconstructed from each council's published calendar. Not every council publishes this far ahead, so coverage thins in later years. Weekends, UK bank holidays, and single-day staff or in-service closures are excluded from the signal. The strip at the top shows hand-authored canonical dates for each of the four nations.
