France school holidays vs UK
France and the UK share the same broad holiday structure — summer, Christmas, and half-terms — but the dates don't always line up. Knowing where they clash, and where they don't, is the difference between a busy week in the Alps and a quiet one.
UK holidays vs French school holidays
Each UK half-term and holiday rated against France's calendar. Clash = significant overlap, expect busy resorts and higher prices. Clear = UK schools off, French schools in — quieter, often cheaper.

The quiet windows
The most useful fact for UK families travelling to France: the first two weeks of July. French schools break up on 4 July 2026, but England, Wales and Northern Ireland don't finish until 21 July. That's a clear 17-day window where France is on holiday but most UK families are still at school — campsites and Eurocamp-style sites are noticeably quieter, and prices reflect it.
Similarly, early June after May half-term is worth considering. UK demand drops sharply the moment half-term ends, while France remains in term until early July. Dordogne, Brittany and the Loire Valley are accessible, not crowded, and priced for French domestic visitors rather than peak British summer.
For ski trips, France's zone system works in your favour. Zone C (Paris) gets its February break earliest — 6–21 Feb 2027 — which means if you're flexible, avoiding Zone C weeks avoids the biggest French domestic demand spike in the Alps.
October half-term and Toussaint
France's Toussaint holiday (17 Oct – 1 Nov 2026) partially overlaps UK October half-term (England: 26–30 Oct). The last week of October is a full UK-France clash — expect premium pricing for Atlantic resorts, Paris, and the Dordogne. The week of 19–25 October is French school holiday but UK term-time: quieter and cheaper for UK visitors without children, but inconvenient for families.
