Italy school holidays vs UK
Italian state schools close for summer between 9 and 16 June 2026, depending on region. English schools do not finish until late July. That five-to-six week gap shapes when Rome, Venice and the Amalfi Coast are crowded, and when they're not.

The June window: Italy's biggest opportunity
Italian schools close in early-to-mid June. Most primary schools finish around 9–12 June; secondary schools around 12–16 June. English schools don't break up until late July, creating a five-to-six week window when Italy is fully in summer mode but UK family demand is low. June temperatures in central and southern Italy regularly exceed 30°C. Accommodation prices are often 20–30% below August rates.
October half-term: no Italian equivalent
Italy has no autumn half-term. UK October half-term (25–29 October 2027) is entirely Italian term time. Autumn temperatures in Rome, Florence and Venice are ideal for walking, and you avoid both the summer heat and the Italian domestic school-holiday crowd. Venice in late October is a different city to the August version.
Christmas: near-total overlap
Italian schools close 23 December and reopen 7 January (after Epiphany on 6 January). UK schools break in the third or fourth week of December and return in early January. The core Christmas period is a full clash. Epiphany (6 January) is a public holiday throughout Italy, with lively local parades in most towns, and UK families returning in the first week of January still catch it.
