Italy school holidays vs UK

Italian state schools closed for summer between 9 and 16 June 2026, depending on region. English schools do not finish until late July. That five-to-six week gap shapes when Rome, Venice and the Amalfi Coast are crowded, and when they're not.

Who else fills Italy

Germany fills more of Italy than the UK does — 20% of its visitor nights against the UK's 8%. The score tracks all of them — here's when their schools break, and the weeks it fills up whatever the UK is doing.

Top tipBook June for Italy's best-value summer

Italian schools close 9–16 June depending on region. Scotland follows on 29 June (three weeks), England, Wales and Northern Ireland not until 21 July (five to six weeks). Rome, Florence and the Amalfi Coast in June: full summer conditions, without the UK school-holiday surcharge.

The June window: Italy's biggest opportunity

Italian schools close for summer on 9–16 June — primary schools 9–12 June, secondary 12–16 June — in both 2026 and 2027. English schools don't break up until late July, creating a five-to-six week window when Italy is fully in summer mode but UK family demand is low. June temperatures in central and southern Italy regularly exceed 30°C. Accommodation prices are often 20–30% below August rates.

October half-term: no Italian equivalent

Italy has no autumn half-term. UK October half-term (25–29 October 2027) is entirely Italian term time. Autumn temperatures in Rome, Florence and Venice are comfortable for walking, and you avoid both the summer heat and the Italian domestic school-holiday crowd. Venice in late October is a different city to the August version.

Christmas: near-total overlap

Italian schools close 23 December and reopen 7 January (after Epiphany on 6 January). UK schools break in the third or fourth week of December and return in early January. The core Christmas period is a full clash. Epiphany (6 January) is a public holiday throughout Italy, with lively local parades in most towns, and UK families returning in the first week of January still catch it.

Italian school holiday dates sourced from regional education authority publications and the Ministero dell'Istruzione e del Merito (MIM). Regional dates are indicative; exact school start and finish dates vary by institution. Always confirm with your specific school or regional authority (Ufficio Scolastico Regionale).
