Switzerland school holidays vs UK
Switzerland's Herbstferien ends in mid-to-late October across most cantons — before UK October half-term begins. Zürich, Lucerne, and the Bernese Oberland are back in school when UK families arrive in late October. The reverse is true in February: Sportferien falls in mid-February, directly overlapping UK skiing demand. Switzerland has 26 cantons across 3 linguistic zones, each with its own calendar.

UK holidays vs Swiss school holidays
Clash = significant overlap with Swiss holidays: busy ski resorts and higher chalet prices. Clear = UK schools off, Swiss schools in: quieter destinations and typically cheaper.
Swiss school holiday dates by zone
Switzerland's 26 cantons are grouped into three linguistic zones. Dates show the range across each zone (earliest start to latest end). Individual cantons within a zone may vary by 1–2 weeks — the ski resort or city you're visiting determines which canton's calendar applies.

The quiet windows for UK families
UK October half-term is the standout opportunity. England's half-term (typically the last week of October) falls after most Swiss cantons have already finished Herbstferien and returned to school. Zürich's Herbstferien ends 18 October 2026; Lucerne's ends 11 October; Basel's ends 11 October. French-speaking Romandy (Geneva, Vaud) finishes by 25 October. By the time UK families arrive for late-October half-term, Swiss city museums, mountain railways, and even the lower ski slopes are operating in normal term-time mode — noticeably quieter and often cheaper.
February is the opposite: book early or avoid the peak. Sportferien falls in mid-February for most cantons, lining up almost exactly with UK February half-term. Verbier, Zermatt, St. Moritz, Davos, and Engelberg are all at maximum capacity that week. If you want to ski at Swiss resorts without the premium pricing, the window is the week before UK half-term begins (when Swiss schools are still in, but UK schools haven't yet broken up) or the week after (when Swiss schools have returned but UK schools are still off for some families).
Late June is a narrow but real summer window. Ticino finishes school around 18 June; Geneva and Vaud follow from 27 June. German-speaking cantons don't break until 4–11 July. English schools finish mid-to-late July. This creates a 2–3 week period in late June when Lugano, Geneva and the Italian-speaking south are in summer mode but the main British influx hasn't arrived yet.
Christmas is an almost total clash. Swiss cantons close 19–24 December and return 3–10 January, directly overlapping the UK Christmas break. Swiss mountain resorts over Christmas/New Year are among the most expensive weeks of the year.
How Switzerland's school system works
Switzerland has 26 cantons, each with constitutional authority over education, including the setting of school holidays. The EDK (Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education) coordinates calendars nationally to avoid all cantons breaking simultaneously, but the stagger is less structured than Germany's KMK rotation system. In practice, three broad patterns emerge, roughly aligned with the country's three linguistic communities.
The most important distinction for UK visitors is the Deutschschweiz (German-speaking majority, covering Zürich, Bern, Lucerne, Basel, Zug, and most ski resort cantons including Graubünden and parts of Valais) versus Romandy (French-speaking west: Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Jura, and French Valais including Verbier). Romandy's autumn break typically ends 5–7 days later than the German zone, which nudges its calendar slightly closer to UK October half-term. Ticino (Italian-speaking south: Lugano, Locarno) runs its autumn break in early November rather than October, aligned more closely with Italian public holidays.
The February sports break — Sportferien in German, Vacances de sports in French — exists because Swiss ski tourism is economically significant. It was designed to give families access to ski resorts at a fixed time each year. The dates are set canton by canton, and cantons with major tourist ski communities (like Obwalden/Engelberg and parts of Valais) sometimes observe a slightly different week from the surrounding non-tourist cantons.
Swiss school holiday dates sourced from the EDK (Schweizerische Konferenz der kantonalen Erziehungsdirektorinnen und -direktoren, edk.ch), the official authority publishing cantonal holiday data annually. Zone groupings (Deutschschweiz, Romandy, Ticino) show the earliest start to latest end across member cantons; individual cantons may differ by 1–2 weeks.
