Croatia school holidays vs UK
Croatia has no October half-term. The state system abolished its autumn break in 2025. UK October half-term week falls in full Croatian term time: Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar are quieter and typically 20–40% cheaper than July peak. Croatian schools also finish in mid-June, not late July, creating a second off-peak window.

The quiet windows for UK families
October half-term is the single best window. Croatia abolished its autumn break from the 2025/26 school year, with no Herbstferien or Toussaint equivalent. UK October half-term week falls in the heart of Croatian term time. Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar and the Dalmatian coast are quieter, and late-season sun is still reliable. Prices are typically 20–40% below the July peak.
Late June is a strong second option. Croatian schools finish in mid-June (around 12–16 June), while English schools typically break in late July. That six-week gap (mid-June to late July) is when the Adriatic is warm and staffed but without the full British family influx. Expect busier Croatian domestic tourism in July, but the UK surge arrives later.
Easter is a partial clash. Croatian spring break (typically the last week of March / first week of April) aligns closely with UK Easter holidays, so this is not a quiet period.
Christmas overlaps almost entirely: both Croatian and UK schools close 23–24 December and return in early January.
Croatia's school year structure
The 2025/26 academic year introduced a simplified structure: one long winter break (24 Dec – 9 Jan), a spring break around Easter (30 March – 6 April 2026), and summer from 15 June 2026. The autumn half-term that previously fell in October was removed. The 2026/27 year follows a similar structure with a proposed February mini-break (22–26 February 2027).
The school year runs at least 175 teaching days for most pupils, with secondary school leavers finishing earlier (around late May) to prepare for the državna matura exams.
