Scottish term dates are unlike the rest of the UK. Pupils return in mid-August, summer ends in late June or early July, and the October break falls a fortnight before England's. Useful for Scottish families, and for anyone elsewhere who can flex their dates.
Scottish schools finish 29 June 2026; England and Wales don't break up until 21 July. Those three weeks are when Scotland is fully on summer holiday but English family demand hasn't peaked. Flights, ferry crossings and European accommodation are all cheaper in that window. If you're a Scottish family with flexibility, early July is consistently better value than August.

The Scottish school year
- The school year starts in mid-August, around three weeks before England. Most pupils return on or around Wednesday 19 August 2026.
- Summer term ends in late June or very early July, giving Scotland a six-week break that finishes before English schools have broken up.
- October half-term is one to two weeks earlier than England's, typically the second or third week of October.
- St Andrew's Day (30 November) is a school holiday in some councils, often combined with an in-service day for a long weekend.
- No formal Easter break in many councils. The spring break has been decoupled from Easter, so Easter weekend itself can fall mid-term with only Good Friday and Easter Monday off.
- Local festival days exist in some areas, most famously the Common Riding holidays in Borders towns like Hawick and Selkirk.
Off-peak windows
The misalignment with the rest of the UK is useful for travel. In date order:
- Early to mid-July. Scottish summer is in full swing while English schools are still in session. Scottish families abroad face less of the demand spike that hits English families later in July.
- Mid-to-late August. Scottish schools are back by 19 August, but England doesn't return until early September. Scotland-as-destination (Highlands, Edinburgh, Loch Lomond) sees a real drop in domestic demand.
- Early October. Scotland is on its autumn break while the rest of the UK is in lessons. Theme parks and the Lake District are quieter than they will be a fortnight later.
Local variation within Scotland
Scottish councils set their own dates and they vary more than English councils do. Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeenshire often differ by a week on summer start dates. The October break can be one week in some councils and two in others. Always check your specific council's calendar before booking.
