Spain school holidays vs UK
Spanish schools break for summer around 22 June 2026. English schools do not finish until late July. Spain is the most popular overseas destination for British families, and knowing when Spanish schools are off tells you whether the Costa Blanca, Barcelona or the Canaries will be packed with local families, or quiet.

How Spanish school holidays work
Unlike the UK, Spain has no national school holiday schedule. Each comunidad autónoma (autonomous community) sets its own term dates. Madrid, Cataluña, Andalucía and the Canary Islands all differ, sometimes by a week or more.
The structure is broadly similar year to year: a Christmas break of around two weeks (ending at Epiphany, 6 January), Semana Santa in spring, summer from late June, and a short Carnival break in some regions. Half-terms in the English sense don't exist; there's no Spanish equivalent of October or May half-term.
The key dates for UK visitors
Summer: the biggest overlap
Spanish schools close for summer around 19–25 June 2026. English, Welsh and Northern Irish schools don't break up until late July. That creates a four-to-six week window, roughly late June to mid-July, when Spain is on summer holiday but most UK families are still in term. Costa resorts, Barcelona and Madrid are busy with Spanish domestic tourists, but not yet with the peak British family crowd.
The final two weeks of August see maximum overlap: all four UK nations are off, Spanish families are on holiday, and prices are at their annual peak across the Costas, Balearics and Canaries.
Semana Santa: broadly aligned with UK Easter
Semana Santa runs from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday or Monday. Because both calendars follow the same Easter date, Spanish and UK Easter breaks largely coincide. Most Spanish communities take 9–11 days off; England and Wales take closer to two weeks, so the UK break typically extends a little longer.
This is one of the busiest domestic travel periods in Spain. Flights, hotels and villa rentals fill up fast. If you're travelling during UK Easter, you are travelling during peak Spanish demand as well.
Christmas: near-total overlap
Spanish Christmas breaks run from around 20–21 December to Epiphany (6–7 January). UK schools break in the third or fourth week of December and return in early January. The core Christmas and New Year period is a full clash. The first few days of January, after UK schools return but before Epiphany, can be slightly quieter for Spanish city breaks, though tourist areas tend to remain busy regardless.
No October half-term in Spain
This is the most valuable difference for UK families. Spain has no autumn half-term. UK October half-term (typically late October) falls entirely in Spanish term time. Beach resorts on the Costas are open but staffed for the shoulder season, significantly cheaper and quieter than August, with sea temperatures still comfortable in the south and the Canaries.
No May half-term equivalent
Similarly, UK May half-term has no Spanish equivalent. Late May is a reliable quiet window for the Canaries, Barcelona and Spanish cities. Weather is warm, crowds are thin, and prices haven't reached their summer peak.
The Canary Islands
The Canaries follow Spanish national holiday patterns but benefit from year-round warmth. Because there's no Spanish October half-term, UK October half-term on Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Lanzarote means British tourists are the primary market. Hotels price accordingly, but you're not competing with the main Spanish domestic peak. February half-term sees more northern European pressure, making it one of the busier Canaries periods.
Spain school holiday dates reflect the typical national pattern for 2026–27. Each autonomous community publishes its own calendar; exact dates may vary by a few days. Always confirm with the regional education authority (Consejería de Educación) for your specific destination.
