Sweden school holidays vs UK
Sweden's höstlov (autumn break) falls in week 44 — the same week as UK October half-term. Unlike Norway or Denmark, Sweden's autumn break directly overlaps with UK half-term, making late October one of the busiest periods at Stockholm and Gothenburg. The upside: Stockholm's sportlov (week 9, early March) comes after UK February half-term, creating a quieter window for winter city breaks.

Sweden's sportlov falls in early March — the week after UK February half-term — so Swedish schools are in session during UK half-term week. Late October is the busiest week: Sweden's höstlov falls in week 44, the same week as UK October half-term. Avoid late October, use late February instead.
Swedish school holiday dates by region
Sweden has no single national school calendar — each municipality sets its own dates. All regions share the same höstlov (week 44), jullov (Christmas), and påsklov (Easter) windows. The main variation is sportlov (the winter sports break), which is staggered across weeks 7–10 to manage demand at ski resorts.

Autumn: the direct overlap with UK half-term
Sweden's höstlov falls in week 44 — 26–30 October 2026 for essentially every Swedish municipality. UK October half-term in England and Wales also falls in week 44, typically the same seven days. This is the sharpest contrast with other Scandinavian countries: Norway's autumn break ends in early October (week 40/41), Denmark's runs the week before UK half-term (week 42), but Sweden's is simultaneous.
The practical consequence: Stockholm's Vasa Museum, ABBA The Museum, Skansen open-air museum, and the archipelago ferries are all at peak capacity during UK October half-term. Gothenburg's Liseberg (which typically closes in late October) has its final weekend crowds. Hotel and transport prices reflect this demand. Early October — before höstlov — and mid-to-late November are substantially quieter periods in Swedish cities.
Sportlov: how the regional stagger creates windows
Swedish sportlov is deliberately staggered across four weeks to spread demand at ski resorts. In 2027: western Sweden and Gothenburg break in week 7 (15–21 February); Malmö and Skåne in week 8 (22–28 February); Stockholm and central Sweden in week 9 (1–7 March); and northern Sweden — Umeå, Luleå, Jämtland, and the Lapland ski resorts — in week 10 (8–14 March).
UK February half-term typically falls in weeks 7–8 (around 15–26 February for most English local authorities). Stockholm's sportlov in week 9 (1–7 March) comes after most UK half-terms have ended. During UK February half-term, Stockholm's schools and offices are running normally — making it a comparatively quiet period for UK families visiting Stockholm, even though Swedish families from Gothenburg and Malmö are taking their own breaks.
For UK families wanting to ski in Sweden — at resorts like Åre, Sälen, or Riksgränsen — the best quiet window is the week before Swedish sportlov for that region. Åre (Jämtland) is in northern Sweden, so it's busiest in week 10. Going in week 9 means Stockholm families haven't yet arrived, and UK families are mostly back from UK half-term. Riksgränsen, Sweden's northernmost ski area, has the added benefit of midnight sun skiing in late season.
Late June: the summer quiet window
Swedish schools finish in mid-June — Stockholm and central schools around 11–12 June 2027; southern schools (including Malmö and Gothenburg) 10–13 June; northern schools 13–15 June. English schools don't finish until mid-to-late July. This four-to-five week window from mid-June is when Sweden enters full summer mode: Midsommar (midsummer) celebrations, archipelago ferry services running at full schedule, open-air restaurants and parks at their liveliest.
For UK visitors without school-age children, or those with pre-school children, late June is consistently the best time to visit Sweden. Flights to Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) and Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) in late June are routinely 30–40% cheaper than equivalent August flights. Stockholm's archipelago — 30,000 islands accessible by Waxholmsbolaget ferries — is spectacular in the long days of late June, and Swedish families are on holiday but UK tourist volumes are low.
The Midsommar weekend (Friday nearest to 24 June 2027 — so Friday 25 June) is worth noting specifically. Much of Sweden effectively shuts for Midsommar Eve, and Stockholm city centre is unusually quiet as Swedish families head to the countryside. The weekend after Midsommar, Swedes return to cities, and the outdoor season runs at full intensity through July.
Christmas and Easter: near-complete overlap
Swedish jullov (Christmas break) runs from approximately 19–21 December 2026 to 6–11 January 2027 (varying by municipality — Stockholm's schools break from 19 December and return 11 January, while southern municipalities typically break 21 December and return 7 January). UK schools close 18–19 December and reopen 5–6 January, making Christmas an almost total clash. Swedish winter markets (advent through mid-December) are the window that avoids school-holiday pressure.
Easter 2027 (Easter Sunday 28 March) is a near-complete overlap. Swedish schools have varying påsklov windows — Gothenburg and Skövde break in week 12 (22–29 March), Stockholm schools break around Good Friday 26 March through 2 April, and Linköping takes week 13 (29 March – 4 April). UK schools also break for Easter around the same period. Early March is the last clear window before both UK and Swedish schools take Easter leave.
