Belgium school holidays vs UK
Belgium has three school communities - Flemish, French and German-speaking - each with separate published calendars. The most important difference for UK families: the French community's Easter/spring break falls in late April to mid-May, not at Easter. UK families visiting Brussels or Wallonia during UK Easter will find schools in session.

UK holidays vs Belgian school holidays
Clash = significant overlap with Belgian school holidays: busy cities and higher prices. Clear = UK schools off, Belgian schools in: quieter and typically cheaper. Dates shown cover all three communities; the widest window of any community is shown.
Belgium school holiday dates by community
Belgium's three school communities publish separate calendars. French community spring break ("détente de printemps") falls in late April–May, not at Easter. This is the biggest structural difference from Flemish and UK calendars.

The quiet windows for UK families
Early July: before UK schools break
Belgian schools (all three communities) break up on or around 1–5 July. English schools don't break until late July. That 3–4 week gap is when Belgium runs its full summer mode: the coast at De Panne and Ostend, Brussels at its most relaxed, the Ardennes cycling and hiking trails open, and UK family demand still weeks away. Prices are notably lower than August.
UK Easter in Wallonia and Brussels: a clear window
The French community spring break falls in late April to early May, nearly a month after UK Easter. This means Brussels, Liège, Namur and the Ardennes are in full term time during UK Easter week. UK families visiting French-speaking Belgium during Easter will find museums, restaurants and hotels operating normally, without the French community crowd pressure. Bruges and Ghent (Flemish) are different: Flemish Easter overlaps substantially with UK Easter.
Carnival week: a quiet(ish) moment
UK February half-term falls during Belgium's Carnival break. Flemish Carnival runs 16–22 February 2026; French Carnival is 16–27 February 2026. The Binche Carnival (UNESCO-listed, Wallonia) takes place on Shrove Sunday, Monday and Tuesday: spectacular but very busy on those specific 3 days. The surrounding week is quieter. If you're visiting for the actual Binche Carnival, note that Flemish schools may still be in session on the Friday before.
How Belgium's school system works
Belgium's education system is divided by language community. The Flemish Community (Dutch-speaking, covering Flanders and Dutch-speakers in Brussels) publishes its calendar via onderwijs.vlaanderen.be. The French Community (Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, covering Wallonia and French-speakers in Brussels) publishes via enseignement.be. The German-speaking Community (Ostbelgien, ~80,000 people in the east near Liège) publishes via ostbelgienbildung.be.
The French community introduced a reformed rolling calendar in September 2022, with regular 6–8 week teaching blocks followed by 2-week breaks. This is why the French spring break ("détente de printemps") now falls consistently in late April–May rather than at Easter. Flemish schools did not adopt this reform; their Easter break remains the traditional late March/April window.
Brussels is officially bilingual. Schools in Brussels operate under either the Flemish or French community framework depending on the school. For tourist purposes, most Brussels attractions, hotels and restaurants draw from both school holiday pools, so expect higher prices during both Flemish and French community breaks.
