Cyprus school holidays vs UK
Cyprus has no October half-term. State schools run term from September to late June with just Christmas, Orthodox Easter and summer breaks. UK October half-term falls in full Cypriot term time, and Orthodox Easter 2027 falls five weeks after the UK break, meaning Easter week is unusually uncrowded too.

The quiet windows for UK families
October half-term: the best window
No other major Mediterranean destination offers this combination: warm late-October sun (typically 24–27°C in Paphos), sea still swimmable, and Cypriot state schools fully in session. UK October half-term falls in a completely normal Cypriot school week. Resorts are operating but without the July–August crush, and prices for flights and accommodation are typically 25–40% below summer peak.
This window is consistent year to year. Cyprus has no plans to reintroduce an autumn break.
Orthodox Easter 2027: a rare clear window
Orthodox Easter 2027 falls on 2 May, five full weeks after Western Easter (28 March 2027). Cypriot schools take their spring break in late April to early May. UK schools return from their Easter break by mid-April and are back in full term. UK Easter half-term 2027 is effectively a clear period for Cyprus: Cypriot schools are in session during the UK break, and UK families who visit will find the island quieter than usual for that week.
In 2026 the offset is smaller (Orthodox Easter 12 April vs Western Easter 5 April, one week difference), so the gap is less dramatic.
Late June: the early summer window
Cypriot schools close in the last week of June, roughly 24–26 June. English schools break in late July. That four-to-five week gap is when Cyprus runs its full summer operation (beaches, watersports, tavernas all open) but the main UK family demand hasn't arrived. Temperatures are already 30°C+.
How Cyprus's school year works
The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (MOEC) sets holiday dates for all state primary and secondary schools. The calendar has three terms separated by Christmas, Easter and summer breaks. There are no half-term breaks in the state system.
Private schools in Cyprus (particularly those following British or international curricula) may run a different calendar that includes October and February half-terms. If you're visiting with UK expat families, check whether their school follows the state or private calendar.
Cyprus follows the Orthodox Easter calendar, not the Gregorian calendar used by Western churches. The gap between Western and Orthodox Easter varies from zero (when they coincide, as in 2025) to five weeks (as in 2027). This shifting offset is one of the most useful tools for finding genuinely quiet windows in Cyprus.
Cyprus school holiday dates sourced from the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (moec.gov.cy) official school calendar for 2025/26 and published draft for 2026/27. Orthodox Easter dates follow the Julian calendar. Private schools may follow different calendars; always confirm with your specific school.
