Poland school holidays vs UK
Poland has no October half-term - UK October half-term falls entirely in Polish term time, making late October one of the best-value weeks to visit Kraków, Warsaw, and Gdańsk. The main overlap risk is February, when Poland's two-week regional winter break coincides with UK February half-term.

UK holidays vs Polish school holidays
Clash = significant overlap with Polish school holidays: busier destinations and higher prices. Clear = UK schools off, Polish schools in: quieter and often cheaper.
Polish school holiday dates
Poland has 16 voivodeships (regions), each assigned to one of three rotation groups for the two-week winter break (ferie zimowe). All other holidays - summer, Christmas, and the spring break - are national and apply everywhere.

- Przerwa świąteczna (Boże Narodzenie)
- Ferie zimowe 2027 (all regions)
- Wiosenna przerwa świąteczna

October half-term: Poland's clearest window
Poland operates a two-semester system with no autumn half-term. Schools run from early September through to the Christmas break in late December without interruption. UK October half-term (last week of October) falls entirely in Polish term time across all 16 voivodeships.
In practice, this means late October is one of the best weeks to visit Poland's main cities. Kraków's Rynek Główny (main square), Wawel Castle queues, and the historic salt mines at Wieliczka are noticeably quieter than during Polish school holidays. Warsaw's Royal Castle, the Old Town, and POLIN museum operate at term-time pace. Gdańsk's Long Market and Amber Museum are uncrowded. Prices for hotels and direct UK-to-Warsaw or UK-to-Kraków flights tend to be lower than in summer or over Christmas.
Ferie zimowe: the winter overlap risk
The ferie zimowe (winter school holidays) are Poland's main overlap risk for UK families. The two-week break is staggered across three groups to avoid overloading ski resorts and tourist infrastructure:
- Group 1 (18–31 Jan 2027): Lower Silesian (Wrocław), Łódź, Opole, Subcarpathian, Podlaskie, Silesian (Katowice)
- Group 2 (1–14 Feb 2027): Masovian (Warsaw), Pomeranian (Gdańsk), Lublin, Świętokrzyskie
- Group 3 (15–28 Feb 2027): Lesser Poland (Kraków), Greater Poland (Poznań), Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Lubusz, Warmian-Masurian, West Pomeranian
The group assignments rotate each academic year. UK February half-term (typically mid-February) overlaps with Groups 2 and 3 - meaning Warsaw and Kraków are at their busiest when UK families arrive. The Tatra Mountains ski resorts around Zakopane see a double-peak from Polish and UK winter half-term demand. For 2028, the groups rotate again: Lesser Poland (Kraków) moves to 14–27 February, still overlapping with UK half-term.
The early summer window
Polish schools finish in the last week of June (27 June 2026, 26 June 2027). English schools don't break until mid-to-late July. That four-week gap is when Poland enters summer mode - outdoor restaurants and beer gardens full, riverfront terraces busy, events on - but without UK family tourism adding to demand. Flights from the UK to Warsaw (Chopin and Modlin) and Kraków (Balice) are markedly cheaper in late June and early July than in August. Accommodation in Kraków's Old Town, which operates at near-capacity in August, has availability and lower rates through most of July.
May half-term (late May/early June) is also a clean window: Poland has no half-term break equivalent, and the weather in southern Poland can already reach 20–25°C.
Christmas: partial overlap
Polish schools close 23 December and officially reopen 2 January (New Year's Day is a public holiday). UK schools typically close around 19–20 December and reopen 5–6 January. The core Christmas period 23 December – 1 January is a near-complete clash, with both Polish and UK families travelling. Early December (before either country breaks up) and early January (after Polish schools return but before UK schools resume) are the two usable gaps around Christmas.
Easter: short Polish break, long UK holiday
Poland's wiosenna przerwa świąteczna (spring Easter break) is just six days - 25–30 March 2027, and similar in other years. UK Easter is two full weeks. The Polish break is short enough that most of UK Easter falls in Polish term time, creating a partial quiet window, especially in the second week of UK Easter holidays when Polish schools have returned.
