Bulgarian grades 1–3 finished on 30 May 2026 — among the earliest summer finishes in Europe. Grades 7–11 follow on 1 July. English schools don't break until late July. The Black Sea coast runs at full capacity from June, but UK family demand doesn't arrive until August.

Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are open and fully staffed from June, but UK family demand doesn't peak until August. Early June prices on the Black Sea are significantly below August.
Bulgarian school holiday dates
Bulgaria operates a single national calendar set by the Ministry of Education and Science (Министерство на образованието и науката / MON). Summer start dates are split by grade band. All other breaks are the same across all grades.

The June window: Black Sea at full capacity, UK families not yet arrived
Bulgarian grades 4–6 finish 13 June 2026. All grades are on holiday from 1 July. English schools don't break until late July — a gap of at least six weeks between the youngest Bulgarian pupils finishing and the UK summer wave. Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag), Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi) and Albena are open, staffed and running full summer operations from early June. Sea temperatures at Burgas average 24°C in July. Accommodation and flights in June are typically 25–35% below August peak.
UK October half-term: in Bulgarian term time
Bulgaria's short autumn break starts 31 October (2025 dates) — typically after UK October half-term ends. UK families visiting Sofia or Plovdiv during UK October half-term week will find Bulgarian schools in full session. The Black Sea coast operates a seasonal schedule and most resort hotels close by late October. Bansko doesn't open for the ski season until December. Sofia's museums, restaurants and historic sites are accessible year-round with no Bulgarian domestic school-holiday traffic.
Bansko and the ski season
Bansko ski resort (2,560 m peak) opens in December and runs to late April. The Bulgarian school calendar has only a three-day mid-term break in late January (31 Jan – 2 Feb 2026), too short to generate significant domestic ski demand. UK February half-term falls entirely in Bulgarian term time. March and April see no Bulgarian school breaks. Bansko is quietest for UK families during UK half-term weeks: Bulgarian schools are in session, international demand is moderate.
Christmas: near-identical to UK
Bulgarian schools close for Christmas on 24 December and reopen on 5 January (after Christmas Eve, Christmas Day 25 Dec, New Year's Day, and Epiphany-adjacent dates). The overlap with UK Christmas break is near-complete. Sofia in December has Christmas markets running through the break.
Spring break: largely aligned with UK Easter
Bulgarian schools break for 10 days in early April (4–13 April 2026) — straddling Orthodox Easter (which aligns with Western Easter in 2026). UK Easter falls 30 March – 13 April 2026, making this one of the most overlapping periods between the two school systems. Expect higher demand at Bulgarian resorts during Easter week 2026.
