Portugal school holidays vs UK
Portugal — especially the Algarve — is one of the most popular UK family destinations. The timing of Portuguese school holidays differs from the UK in ways that create genuine opportunities for quieter, cheaper trips.
UK holidays vs Portuguese school holidays
Clash = significant overlap with Portuguese holidays — busy resort areas. Clear = UK schools off, Portuguese schools in — quieter Algarve, better value.
Portuguese school holiday dates
Continental Portugal and the Açores share most dates. Madeira follows a slightly different calendar.

The Algarve quiet windows
Portugal's summer holiday starts well before the UK's. Continental Portuguese schools typically break in mid-June — around 12–19 June 2026 — while England and Wales don't finish until 21 July. That's a roughly five-week window when the Algarve is in peak season weather but UK family demand is low. Prices in June are significantly below August levels, and the beaches are far less congested.
This is the single most useful scheduling difference between the two countries for British families: a June Algarve trip costs materially less than an August one, with sea temperatures already comfortable and all facilities open.
Easter (Páscoa) — close but not identical
Portugal's Easter break (Férias da Páscoa) runs 22 March – 2 April 2027 for Continental Portugal. UK Easter for England runs 26 March – 11 April — so there is a solid 8-day overlap in the core Easter week, but UK schools remain off for over a week after Portuguese schools have returned. The tail end of UK Easter (3–11 April 2027) is Portuguese term-time: Lisbon and the Algarve are noticeably calmer than in Holy Week itself.
Christmas — almost identical, small gap at each end
Portugal's Christmas break (Férias de Natal) for Continental Portugal runs 16 December 2026 – 31 December. England breaks 19 December – 3 January 2027. The main Christmas period is a full clash. The first few days of January are UK holiday but Portuguese term-time — though this makes little practical difference since most businesses in tourist areas stay closed through Epiphany regardless.
Carnaval — no UK equivalent
Portugal has a short Carnaval break (Férias de Carnaval) in February — just three days in 2027 (8–10 Feb) for Continental Portugal. UK February half-term runs 15–19 Feb 2027 for England. These don't overlap, so UK February half-term falls in Portuguese term-time. Lisbon and Porto in February half-term week are running at normal domestic pace — good value for a city break.
October and May half-term
Portugal has no equivalent to either. UK October half-term (late October) and May half-term are both Portuguese term-time. The Algarve in late October is one of the classic British half-term destinations — warm enough, far less crowded than August, and with hotel prices reflecting shoulder season rather than peak. The same logic applies to late May, though sea temperatures are cooler then.
Portuguese holiday dates sourced from official ministerial despachos. Continental Portugal and Açores dates are confirmed through 2027/28. Madeira follows Despacho 521/2025 for 2025/26 only. Always confirm with your specific school or destination.
