Austria school holidays vs UK

Austria's autumn break is just 4 days (28–31 October) and is shared across all 9 states. UK October half-term overlaps almost exactly - October is not a quiet window. The more interesting windows are the staggered summer starts (East Austria breaks up 1–2 weeks before the Alpine states) and the February semester break, which coincides with peak UK ski demand.

Who else fills Austria

Germany fills more of Austria than the UK does — 38% of its visitor nights against the UK's 2%. The score tracks all of them — here's when their schools break, and the weeks it fills up whatever the UK is doing.

Top tipAustria's October break is just four days and clashes with UK half-term — avoid it

Austria's autumn break (28–31 October) overlaps almost exactly with UK half-term. It is not a quiet window. The more useful gap is early summer: East Austrian states (Vienna, Lower Austria) break up in late June, one to two weeks before Alpine states and before England's late July finish.

The quiet windows for UK families

Early July: before UK schools break

East Austria (Wien, Niederösterreich, Burgenland) breaks for summer in late June to early July — around 4 July 2026, 3 July 2027. The Alpine states (Tirol, Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Steiermark) break 1–2 weeks later, around 11 July 2026. English schools don't break until late July. That 2–3 week gap is when Austria is in full summer season (lakes open, outdoor restaurants busy) but UK family demand hasn't arrived. Prices sit well below late July and August.

February skiing: expect crowds

The Semesterferien (semester break) is Austria's main ski holiday. Wien and Niederösterreich break in the first week of February; Tirol, Vorarlberg and Salzburg break in the second or third week. UK February half-term typically falls in mid-to-late February, meaning it either coincides with Austrian Semesterferien or lands in the window just after, when Austrian families have gone home but resorts are still running at near-peak pricing. There's rarely a truly quiet February week in the main Austrian ski resorts.

The exception is January: Austrian schools are in full session from the first week back after Christmas (typically 7 January) until the Semesterferien begins. If you can travel in mid-January, Austrian ski resorts are quieter, with no Austrian school groups and lower prices.

Easter: variable overlap

Austrian Easter dates are fixed across all 9 states (Western calendar). They align closely with UK Easter most years. 2027 is an exception: UK Easter falls 28 March to 6 April (England), while Austrian Osterferien runs 20–29 March, a week earlier. This creates a partial clear window for the second week of UK Easter in Austria.

How Austria's holiday system works

Austria's 9 federal states (Bundesländer) each set their own school calendars within a federal framework published by the BMBWF (Federal Ministry of Education). Autumn, Christmas and Easter dates are identical nationwide. Semester and summer breaks are staggered to spread motorway and ski lift demand; the BMB publishes a multi-year schedule (Ferientermine) for planning ahead.

The summer stagger puts East Austria (Wien, Niederösterreich, Burgenland) on the early group and the Alpine states on the later group. This is deliberate: the Alpine states' later start aligns with their later-season peak, while Vienna's cultural summer runs through July regardless.

Austria school holiday dates sourced from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education (bmb.gv.at, formerly bmbwf.gv.at) official Ferientermine pages for 2024/25, 2025/26 and 2026/27. 2027/28 not yet published. All 9 states verified; autumn, Christmas and Easter dates are identical across all states. Semester and summer dates vary by state group.
