Malta school holidays vs UK

Malta has no October half-term. State schools run term from late September through to late June with just a 3-day November mid-term, Christmas, 2-day Carnival break and Easter. UK October half-term falls in full Maltese term time, making Valletta, Gozo and the resorts noticeably quieter and cheaper that week.

Who else fills Malta

The UK is one of the biggest markets for Malta, but Italy (12%) and others arrive on their own school calendars. The score tracks all of them — here's when their schools break, and the weeks it fills up whatever the UK is doing.

Top tipUK October half-term is Malta's cheapest and quietest week

Maltese state schools have no October half-term. UK October half-term falls in full Maltese term time: Valletta, Gozo and St Julian's are quieter than summer with prices to match. Maltese schools also finish in late June — a few weeks before England — creating a second window in late June and early July.

The quiet windows for UK families

October half-term: the standout window

Malta in late October is warm (typically 23–25°C), the sea is still swimmable at 23°C, and Maltese state schools are fully in session. UK October half-term lands in a normal Maltese school week. Flight prices and hotel rates are typically 30–45% below August peak. Valletta, the Three Cities, and Gozo are at their most relaxed.

This pattern is reliable year to year. Malta has no plans to introduce an autumn break into the state school calendar.

Early July: before UK schools break

Maltese schools finish in late June. English schools don't break until mid-to-late July. That gap (roughly 1–21 July) is the early summer window when Malta is fully in holiday mode (pools open, full restaurant service, beach clubs operating) but UK family demand hasn't arrived. It's warm (28–30°C), the island is busy with European tourists but not at August peak.

February: Carnival is only 2 days

Malta's Carnival break is just 2 days immediately before Ash Wednesday - nothing like the full week UK families get at February half-term. The net result is that UK February half-term is largely a clear period in Malta: Maltese schools are in session for most of the week. Malta Carnival itself (the costumed festival in Valletta) is actually worth seeing if your timing aligns.

How Malta's school year works

The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) publishes the scholastic calendar, which sets dates for all state primary and secondary schools. The academic year starts on the fourth Monday of September and runs to late June, with half-days (marking period) through most of June. There are no October or February half-term breaks in the state system.

Private and Church schools in Malta follow broadly similar calendars, but some international schools following British curricula may observe UK-style October and February half-terms. If you're visiting with families whose children attend international schools, confirm which calendar they follow.

Malta has English as one of its two official languages (alongside Maltese), making it an unusually accessible Mediterranean destination for UK families: menus, signs and day-to-day interactions are conducted in English across the islands.

Malta school holiday dates sourced from the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) scholastic calendar PDFs for 2024/25 and 2025/26, cross-referenced with La Salle Malta and Newark School Malta parent circulars. 2026/27 dates from Newark School Malta (provisional; MUT PDF not yet published). No October or February half-term exists in the state school system.
