Romania school holidays vs UK
Romanian counties do not share one winter break. Each picks a single week from three consecutive options running 15 February to 7 March 2027, so about a third of the country is off in any one of them. That spreads domestic crowding thin where other European calendars concentrate it.
Romanian school holiday dates
Romania runs a national calendar set by the Ministry of Education and Research, with one deliberate exception: the winter break is a county choice between three consecutive weeks, listed here as options 1 to 3. Every other break is common to the whole country.

Romania’s own dates are confirmed to 5 Sep 2027; weeks past the marked line are scored from the other markets that visit, without the local calendar. UK dates confirmed to 31 Aug 2028; hatched beyond that. Romania’s crowd score is the same for every visitor — the bands only mark when UK schools are out.
Who else fills Romania
Germany fills more of Romania than the UK does — 2% of its visitor nights against the UK's 1%. The score tracks all of them — here's when their schools break, and the weeks it fills up whatever the UK is doing.
| Market | Share of nights | Summer schools out | vs UK |
|---|---|---|---|
| Romania (local families) | 84% | 19 Jun – 5 Sep 2027 | 5 wks earlier |
| Germany | 2% | 28 Jun – 13 Sep 2027 staggered | 3 wks earlier |
| Italy | 2% | 9 Jun – 16 Sep 2027 | 6 wks earlier |
| UK (you) | <1% | 22 Jul – 31 Aug 2027 | your dates |
Busiest overlap: in December 2026, source markets worth 88% of Romania's visitor nights are on school holiday at once.

Romania closes 24 October–1 November 2026. Scotland is off 12 October–23 October 2026, finishing before that starts, so Bucharest, Brasov and the painted monasteries of Bucovina stay in term time for the whole Scottish week. England's 26 October–30 October 2026 sits inside the Romanian break instead.
The winter break that is three weeks wide
England’s February half-term (15 February–19 February 2027) overlaps one of the three Romanian option weeks. Because counties choose between them, only the share of Romania that picked that week is off — not the country. Poiana Brasov and Sinaia in the Prahova Valley therefore carry roughly a third of the domestic ski pressure an Alpine resort sees during a fixed national break, which is the single most useful thing to know about timing a Romanian ski week.
Orthodox Easter puts the spring break after the UK's
Romania’s spring break runs 24 April–4 May 2027, tied to Orthodox Easter. England’s Easter holiday ends 11 April 2027 — 13 days earlier, with no overlap at all. A UK family travelling over Easter meets Romanian schools in full session. It is the widest clean gap of the year between the two calendars, and it falls in the shoulder season when Transylvania is green and the Carpathian passes have reopened.
An eleven-week summer, starting a month before England's
Romanian schools break up on 19 June 2027 and return 5 September 2027 — close to eleven weeks, among the longest summers in Europe. England does not finish until 22 July 2027, 33 days later. The Black Sea coast at Mamaia and Vama Veche is in full domestic season from late June, well before UK demand arrives, so the quiet window on that coast is not early summer but early September, once Romanian schools go back and the sea is still warm.
Dates sourced from the Ministerul Educației și Cercetării orders setting the school-year structure: Ordin nr. 3.463/04.03.2025 for 2025/26 (Monitorul Oficial Partea I nr. 206/10.III.2025) and Ordin nr. 3.194/09.02.2026 for 2026/27 (Monitorul Oficial Partea I nr. 126/16.II.2026). The three winter option weeks are set centrally; which one a given county takes is decided by its school inspectorate, so a specific town may differ from the option shown.

Common questions
When is the Romanian school winter holiday?
Romania has no single national winter holiday. Each county chooses one week from three consecutive options, running 15 February to 7 March 2027. The Ministry of Education sets the three windows and county school inspectorates pick between them, so roughly a third of Romanian pupils are off in each. For travel timing this matters more than the exact dates: domestic crowding at ski resorts such as Poiana Brasov and Sinaia is diluted across three weeks instead of concentrated in one.
Do Romanian school holidays clash with UK October half-term?
Partly, and it splits by nation. Romania's autumn break runs 24 October–1 November 2026. England's half-term (26 October–30 October 2026) falls inside it, while Scotland's (12 October–23 October 2026) finishes before it begins. Scottish families therefore get Bucharest, Brasov and Bucovina in term time; English families arrive during the Romanian break.
When do Romanian schools finish for summer?
Romanian schools finish on 19 June 2027 and return on 5 September 2027, close to eleven weeks and among the longest school summers in Europe. That is roughly a month before English schools break up. The consequence for the Black Sea coast is that Mamaia and Vama Veche are already at domestic peak through July and August, so the genuinely quiet window there is early September, after Romanian schools return but while the sea is still warm.
